The Art at the Hearst Tower & Plaza


Hearst Tower Lobby-Plaza Entrance
Entering the lobby from the plaza, in the window to the right is Bird by Italian sculptor Carlo Sergio Signori (1906-1988), and to the left is Mandala by Jack Zajac (1929-).  Both sculptures were created from Carrara marble.

Hearst Tower Lobby-College Street Entrance
The 38 bronze stairway and balcony grilles were designed and created by Edgar Brandt.The Brandt grilles were forged in 1923-24 for the Au Bon Marche department stored located on the Left Bank of Paris.  In 1985, these grilles were obtained by Urban Archaeology, a company that preserves architectural artifacts, and shipped to the United States.  Bank of America acquired the grilles in 2000.

Niche to the right of the Tower elevators
Eagle by Dame Elizabeth Frink (1930-1993) us on loan to the building from the Hearst Corporation.  It is a duplicated casting by the artist of the original bronze, which was erected in Grosvenor Square, London, in 1986 as a memorial to the Eagle Squadrons. 

Hearst Plaza
At the entrance to the Plaza is a sculpture by Howard Ben Tre.  Castallan Figure is a cast glass and bronze fountain, approximately 10 feet in height, that is fiber optically lit from within.  Two Ben Tre cast glass and bronze Light Towers, also 10 feet high and lit from within, are located on the stairs.

Bank of America Gallery
Entering the Tower lobby from the plaza, the Bank of America Gallery is located to the left.  Free and open every day except Sunday, it features changing exhibitions from the Bank of America Art Collection.

The Bank of America Gallery opened in Charlotte in the Hearst Tower in 2002 for the purpose of sharing the collection with a larger audience and creating an opportunity for discussion and learning. Changing exhibitions of art from the bank’s large collection are mounted throughout the year. Guest curators are invited to put together shows around the selected theme.

The gallery is open Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturdays, 10: a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public. If you have questions, please contact the bank’s Art Program at 704-386-7324 or 704-388-3104.


Outdoor Plaza Area
HearstTower has a beautiful outdoor plaza that is equipped with table and chairs, planters, water fountain and trash receptacles.  The planters are landscaped with trees and seasonal flowers.  The outdoor plaza is accessible from the Tryon lobby level.  The outdoor plaza area is a great place for the Hearst Tower occupants to get away from the office and relax during the business day.

Umbrella Program
Hearst Tower offers an umbrella program to all Hearst Tenants.  Tenants should request the use of an umbrella between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday from the Security Control Center located in the building lobby on Tryon Street level.  A Hearst Tower Building access card is required to check out a Hearst Tower umbrella.  Building Management asked that all umbrellas be returned to the Security Control Center within (1) one day from the date loaned out between the hours of 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.  If an umbrella is not returned within one (1) day, an invoice for $45.00 will be sent to the responsible party for reimbursement of the un-returned umbrella.

Tenant Representative Program
The Hearst Tower Tenant Representative Committee is comprised of select members of each tenant occupying a space within the building.  The Tenant Representative program is a great communication conduit between building management and the building occupants.  If you would like more information or would like to serve on the Tenant Representative Committee, please contact Building Management at 704.887.1200.

Hearst Tower Retail
Hearst Tower is comprised of approximately 47,000 square feet of retail space within the tower and 7,300 square feet of retail space on the plaza.
